Lucas Oil Raceway is famous as the site for the U.S. Nationals, arguably the best known and anticipated stop on the NHRA drag racing circuit. Therefore, it’s no surprise that many of Monday’s attendees lined the staging lanes for the opportunity to run their cars down the historic dragstrip.
This year’s HOT ROD Power Tour includes three dragstrips and two fairground stops for the week. Monday is all about the Indianapolis Raceway Park strip, and Tuesday will back that up with a cruise to Joliet, Illinois, and the historic NHRA Route 66 Raceway. It’s been increasingly rare for those outside of NHRA to get to run there, so we imagine demand for lanes will be high.
Compared to the rest of the week Monday is pretty chill since there’s no cruising involved. The will all change Tuesday morning as thousands of participants wind their way through America’s backroads to Route 66 Raceway, a 188-mile countryside cruise.
There was autocross action for those that craved a little cone dodging as compared to doing dragstrip blasts. Like the drag strip, it was open to all Power Tour participants.
In addition to the rolling car show, a huge vendor midway follows the event from stop to stop. It’s a great way for manufacturers to show off their ways and for participants to go hands on with the latest and greatest hot rod parts.
For 2025, the Chevrolet Performance HOT ROD Power Tour Driven by Hagerty will travel 651 miles over the four days of driving, and that doesn’t even include the hundreds of miles people drove to get to the event and to eventually drive back home.
One aspect of Power Tour we love is that you never know what you’ll see, and the weirder ones are typically Long Haulers doing the entire route!
Another new happening at the 2025 HRPT is Pro Street Alley where Mike Cotton and a host of other big tire Pro Street monsters will park to show off to the thousands of spectators.

Born and raised in Southern California I started as the technical editor for Popular Hot Rodding (PHR) magazine where I learned the business before moving over to work with Nick Licata, at Camaro Performers, as his tech editor. At PHR I built a 1968 Camaro called Bad Penny that was one of the earlier pro-touring cars that actually ran the track hard. We won the first Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational in 2008 and placed well several other years. At Camaro Performers we started several project cars and did a ton of tech. Eventually I was made editor of Vette magazine for a short time before being slotted to run Super Chevy magazine. Running the brands was fun, but I've always enjoyed being a technical writer more. So after more than 15 years I'm back to writing tech content, this time for the HOT ROD network. I enjoy being with my family, shooting, and working on my latest car, a 1969 Camaro called Tri Tip.
